Tips for Moving with Pets
June 9, 2026

Moving with pets adds a layer of complexity that most moving guides completely ignore. Your dog doesn’t understand why all the furniture is disappearing. Your cat is going to find the one open door at the worst possible moment. And Oklahoma’s summer heat — with temperatures regularly hitting 95–105°F from June through August — creates genuine safety risks for pets left in vehicles or exposed to heat during a long moving day.

Whether you’re relocating within Norman near OU’s campus, moving from Moore to Edmond, or making a longer haul across the OKC metro, this guide covers everything you need to know to move your pets safely and reduce their stress throughout the process. Serenity Moving Services doesn’t transport pets — for safety and liability reasons, your animals travel with you — but we can handle everything else so you can focus on keeping your pets calm and secure.

Why Pet-Friendly Moving Planning Matters

Pets experience moving very differently than humans do. They don’t get to preview the new house or understand why everything smells wrong. What they experience is a sudden disruption of every familiar routine and environment — and their stress response can range from hiding and refusing to eat all the way to escape attempts and aggression.

In the OKC metro specifically, there are a few local factors worth planning around:

  • Apartment restrictions: Many Norman complexes near OU — Campus Corner, Lindsey Street, and further east — have breed and weight restrictions that differ from your current building. Confirm your new lease’s pet policy before moving day, not after
  • Oklahoma heat: A pet left in a parked vehicle on a 95°F Oklahoma summer day can reach life-threatening temperatures within 10 minutes. Plan your moving day schedule with this in mind — pets need to be in air-conditioned spaces throughout
  • Fenced yard availability: If you’re moving from an apartment to a Moore or Edmond home with a fenced yard, that’s a huge adjustment period for dogs who’ve only known leash walks
  • New vet registration: If you’re moving across the metro, your current vet may not be convenient anymore. Research new vets in your destination neighborhood before you move, not after your pet needs care

Before Moving Day: Preparation (Start 4–6 Weeks Out)

Update ID and Microchip Information

This is the single most important step and the one most people forget. Update your pet’s microchip registration with your new address before moving day — not after. If your pet escapes during the chaos of moving, an outdated microchip registration pointing to your old address makes recovery significantly harder. Also update ID tags on collars with your new address and phone number.

Schedule a Pre-Move Vet Visit

Book a vet appointment 3–4 weeks before your move. At this visit:

  • Get copies of all vaccination records, medication prescriptions, and health history — you’ll need these to register with a new vet
  • Discuss travel anxiety with your vet if your pet has a history of stress during car rides or new environments — there are both prescription and over-the-counter options worth knowing about before moving day
  • Confirm your pet is up to date on flea/tick prevention — this matters especially if you’re moving to a home with a yard in the Norman or Moore area
  • Ask for a referral to a vet near your new location if you’re crossing a significant distance within the metro

Crate Training and Carrier Acclimation

If your pet isn’t already comfortable in a crate or carrier, start the acclimation process immediately — not the day before the move. Leave the crate open in your living space with familiar bedding inside. Feed treats near it, then inside it. Build positive associations over weeks so the carrier becomes a safe space, not a threat signal. A pet that’s comfortable in their crate is dramatically calmer on moving day than one being forced into an unfamiliar enclosure for the first time.

Maintain Routine as Long as Possible

Dogs and cats are highly attuned to routine. Keep feeding times, walk schedules, and play sessions as consistent as possible during the weeks leading up to your move. The more stable their routine stays, the less anxious they’ll be when the actual disruption happens.

Packing Weeks: Keeping Pets Calm During Chaos

The packing process is often more disruptive to pets than moving day itself. Boxes appearing, furniture being moved, unfamiliar people coming and going — all of it signals something major is happening. During the packing phase:

  • Keep your pet’s core space — their bed, feeding station, and favorite spots — intact as long as possible. Pack their area last
  • Use pheromone diffusers (Feliway for cats, Adaptil for dogs) in the rooms your pets spend the most time in — these can meaningfully reduce anxiety during the disruption period
  • Give extra exercise during packing weeks — a tired dog is a calmer dog. Norman’s Griffin Park, Reaves Park, and the trails along the South Canadian River are good options for wearing out anxious dogs before a stressful day
  • If you’re using our professional packing service, schedule pet care for packing day the same way you would for moving day — having strangers in the home packing every room is stressful for animals

Moving Day: Keeping Pets Safe

Moving day is the highest-risk day for pets. Doors are constantly opening and closing, strangers are moving through the home, and the environment is in complete chaos. This is when escape attempts happen.

The Safest Option: Board or Have Someone Watch Your Pet

The genuinely safest moving day approach for both your pet and your moving crew is to have your pet somewhere else entirely — boarded at a facility, with a trusted friend or family member, or in a doggy daycare. This eliminates the escape risk completely and lets your crew work efficiently without worrying about a dog underfoot or a cat bolting through an open door.

If Your Pet Stays at the Home During the Move

If boarding isn’t an option:

  • Designate one room as the pet room — put their bed, water, food, litter box, and a familiar blanket in there, then close the door and put a sign on it telling movers to keep it closed
  • Tell your moving crew lead at the start of the day that there’s a pet in that room — our crews take this seriously
  • Check on your pet regularly throughout the day, but minimize opening the door
  • Keep your pet in the carrier or crate during loading and unloading — not loose in the room

Travel Day Safety in Oklahoma Heat

If your move involves any significant drive time, Oklahoma summer heat demands specific precautions:

  • Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle — not even for a few minutes. In direct Oklahoma summer sun, vehicle interiors can reach 130°F+
  • Plan your driving route around rest stops where your pet can get out, stretch, and drink water
  • Bring a portable water bowl and plenty of water — pets dehydrate faster in heat and stress
  • Keep the car air conditioned throughout the drive — not just when you’re in it
  • For long-distance moves out of state, our long-distance moving team can advise on timing and logistics to keep your moving day as short as possible

Arrival and Acclimation at Your New Home

Set Up a Safe Space First

Before you bring your pet into the new home, set up their space — bed, familiar blanket, food and water bowls, litter box for cats, toys. Bring them into this space first and let them explore from that anchor point rather than being overwhelmed by the entire new home at once.

Introduce the New Space Gradually

Don’t open every door and let your pet roam freely on day one. Start with one or two rooms and expand access over the first few days as they become comfortable. This is especially important for cats, who can hide for days in an unfamiliar environment if they feel overwhelmed.

Explore New Outdoor Spaces Carefully

Even if your new home has a fenced yard, do a perimeter check before letting your dog loose — look for gaps in fencing, loose boards, or areas where a determined dog could dig under. The OKC metro has excellent dog-friendly parks once your pet has settled in:

  • Norman: Reaves Park dog park, Griffin Park trails, the path system along the South Canadian River
  • Oklahoma City: Lake Hefner trails, Hafer Park in Edmond, Scissortail Park downtown
  • Moore: Veterans Memorial Park, Central Park trails

Wait until your pet has had at least a few days to acclimate to the new home before introducing busy public parks — the additional stimulation of new people, dogs, and smells on top of the move stress can be overwhelming.

Re-establish Routine Immediately

The fastest way to help your pet settle is to restore their routine as quickly as possible. Feed at the same times, walk at the same times, and maintain familiar rituals. Routine signals safety to animals — the sooner normal life resumes, the faster they’ll relax.

Post-Move: Signs of Stress to Watch For

Monitor your pet closely in the first 1–2 weeks after the move. Normal adjustment stress looks like:

  • Hiding or staying in one room (cats especially)
  • Reduced appetite for the first day or two
  • More clingy or more aloof than usual
  • Disrupted sleep patterns

Contact your vet if you notice:

  • Not eating for more than 48 hours
  • Vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than a day
  • Lethargy beyond the first few days
  • Aggression that isn’t typical for your pet
  • Signs of depression that don’t improve after a week

The time it takes for a pet to adjust to a new home depends on their age and personality. Pay attention to their eating habits, sleep patterns, and willingness to play—these are indicators of how well they’re settling in. Some pets take a few days, while others take several weeks. However, maintaining a consistent routine can speed up the process.

Moving involves constant door opening, loud noises, and lots of activity that can frighten pets. Consider having a trusted friend or pet sitter watch your pets on moving day. If you need to keep them with you, set aside a quiet room with their food, water, and bedding, and check on them regularly throughout the day.

I hired them to move a huge, very heavy vending machine. I was expecting to have struggles getting the machine out of the business since we struggled getting it in, but they got it out not only effortlessly but SO FAST. They got it moved to the new location and unloaded and put where I needed. This was the easiest, fastest and most efficient move I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. They were also the most affordable . I called around for weeks getting quotes and they beat the competition by about half the price.
