How To Safely Move a Piano

How To Safely Move a Piano
Difficulty: Hard Move Time: 1 - 3 hours Prep Time: 1 - 2 hours

A piano is a heavy, bulky, and delicate instrument. Pianos weigh anywhere from 300 to 1,200 pounds depending on the type — a small spinet is manageable, but a concert grand is an entirely different undertaking. A single scratch, bump, or knock can cause significant damage to the sound or value of your instrument. Moving a piano is not just about convenience — it’s about protecting a valuable investment that can cost thousands to repair or restore.

If you decide to move your piano yourself, here’s everything you need to know. And if at any point this guide makes you reconsider doing it alone, our Oklahoma piano moving service handles uprights, baby grands, and concert grands across Norman, Oklahoma City, Edmond, and Moore.

Preparing to Move a Piano

Plan Your Route

Before you touch the piano, assess the entire path from its current location to its destination.

  • Measure every doorway, hallway, and stairwell on the route — piano width plus blanket padding needs to clear every opening
  • Identify any tight turns, low ceilings, or obstacles in advance
  • Determine what type of piano you have — upright, spinet, baby grand, or concert grand — since each moves differently and requires different equipment
  • Note any decorative features like carved legs or ornate casework that need extra protection

If you’re moving between rooms within the same home, the route planning is relatively straightforward. If you’re moving to a new address entirely, see our guide on planning a full move — pianos need to be coordinated with the rest of your moving logistics carefully.

Gather the Right Equipment

Attempting to move a piano without proper equipment is how pianos and people get hurt. You’ll need:

  • Heavy-duty lifting straps — prevents the piano from slipping during lifting and loading
  • Dolly or hand truck — a four-wheel dolly for uprights, a piano skid board for grands
  • Moving blankets — wrap the entire piano to absorb shock and prevent scratches; secure with tape or straps, never directly to the piano finish
  • Piano board — required for grand pianos, which must be moved on their side after leg removal
  • Packing tape — to secure blankets and keep the keyboard lid closed during the move
  • Gloves — protects your hands and gives you grip
  • Closed-toe shoes — mandatory for everyone involved

If you don’t own this equipment and are considering renting it, factor that cost into your decision. Our loading and unloading service brings all equipment included — sometimes the math favors hiring professionals when you add up rental costs and your time.

Assemble a Moving Team

Never attempt to move a piano alone. You’ll need at minimum 3–5 people depending on the piano type and route complexity. An upright piano on a single floor with wide doorways might be manageable with 3 strong people. A grand piano on stairs needs 5 or more with clearly assigned roles before anyone lifts anything.

If you can’t assemble a capable team, this is the clearest signal to hire professionals. Our piano movers in Oklahoma have handled hundreds of moves across the metro — uprights from 3rd floor OU apartments, baby grands from Nichols Hills homes, concert grands from churches and performance venues.

Wrap and Secure the Piano

Remove or Secure Loose Items

Before wrapping, clear everything off and out of the piano — music sheets, books, decorations on top, and anything stored inside the bench. Close and lock the keyboard lid if possible. Remove the music stand if it detaches easily.

Protect the Piano

Wrap the entire piano in thick moving blankets — top, sides, back, and legs. Use packing tape to secure the blankets to each other, never tape directly to the piano’s finish or keys. Pay extra attention to corners, which are the most vulnerable to impact damage.

Secure with Straps

Once wrapped, run straps around the piano in a crisscross pattern to hold everything firmly. Tight enough that nothing shifts — loose enough that you’re not compressing the casework. Test by trying to shift the blankets; they should hold firm.

Lifting the Piano Properly

This is where most DIY piano moves go wrong. Before anyone lifts:

  • Confirm the keyboard lid is closed and locked
  • Confirm all blankets and straps are secure
  • Assign a leader — one person calls all movements; nobody lifts until they say lift
  • Position people evenly around the piano to distribute weight
  • Lift with legs, not backs — keep the piano close to your body
  • Place the piano on the dolly or piano board using a coordinated lift, not a slide

Moving Through Doorways and Stairs

Doorways and stairs are where pianos get damaged. For doorways, tilt the piano slightly if needed to clear the frame — but never force it. Measure before you attempt. For stairs, use a stair ramp if available. Move slowly with one person controlling the pace and everyone else maintaining steady control. Never let the piano’s weight pull the team — that’s when control is lost.

If your move involves multiple flights of stairs, narrow historic doorframes, or tight stairwell turns, this is not a DIY situation. Norman’s OU-area apartments and Oklahoma City’s Heritage Hills and Mesta Park homes regularly have conditions that make piano moving genuinely dangerous without proper equipment and experience.

Moving a Piano to a New Home

Consider Hiring Professional Movers

Moving a piano within a room is one thing. Moving it to a new address — loading it onto a truck, transporting it across town or across state lines, and unloading it at the other end — is significantly more complex. If you’re doing a full move, our local moving service handles piano coordination as part of the full move, or we can move just the piano as a standalone job. For moves out of Oklahoma, our long-distance moving service is fully licensed for interstate piano transport.

Rent the Right Size Truck

If moving the piano yourself, the truck needs to be large enough that the piano fits without being crammed, but not so large that it slides around freely. An upright piano typically needs at minimum a 16-foot truck with adequate wall space to strap it against. A grand needs even more clearance. Consult the rental company on sizing — undersizing is the more dangerous mistake.

Note: if you’re renting a truck and just need help loading and unloading, our labor-only loading service works with customer-provided trucks and containers.

Load the Piano Safely

Use the same controlled team lift method to load onto the truck. Position the piano against a wall — uprights go vertically, grands go on their side on the piano board. Never lay an upright piano on its back.

Strap the Piano In

Strap the piano firmly against the truck wall using moving straps anchored to the truck’s tie-down rails. The piano should have no more than an inch of movement in any direction. Double-check before closing the truck.

After the Move

Check for Damage Immediately

Once the piano is in place and unwrapped, inspect it before anything else. Check the exterior — legs, pedals, corners, and the finish. Look for chips, dents, cracks, or finish damage. If professional movers handled the move, document any damage immediately and contact the company — most reputable movers carry liability coverage. See our guide on moving insurance for how coverage works on specialty items.

Tune Your Piano After the Move

Even a perfectly executed move will likely require a tuning afterward. Changes in humidity, temperature, and the physical movement itself affect string tension. Wait at least 2–4 weeks after the move before tuning — let the piano acclimate to the humidity and temperature of its new room first, then schedule the tuner.

Ongoing Piano Maintenance

  • Maintain room temperature between 68–72°F and humidity between 40–50%
  • Keep the piano away from exterior walls, drafty windows, heating vents, and direct sunlight
  • Clean with a soft dry cloth — avoid all chemical cleaners on the finish or keys
  • Use a piano cover to protect from dust when not in use

When to Call a Professional Piano Mover

After reading through all of this, the honest answer for most people is: hire a professional. The cost of professional piano moving is almost always less than the cost of repairing a damaged piano — or a back injury. If any of the following apply to your situation, call us instead of attempting it yourself:

  • You have a grand or baby grand piano
  • Your route involves stairs — especially more than one flight
  • You have narrow doorways or tight hallways
  • You’re moving to a new address rather than just repositioning within your home
  • You can’t assemble a team of at least 3–4 capable people
  • The piano has significant monetary or sentimental value

I hired them to move a huge, very heavy vending machine. I was expecting to have struggles getting the machine out of the business since we struggled getting it in, but they got it out not only effortlessly but SO FAST. They got it moved to the new location and unloaded and put where I needed. This was the easiest, fastest and most efficient move I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with.
