3. Use the Right Box Size for Each Item
Box size selection is one of the most common packing mistakes. The rule is simple: heavy items go in small boxes, light items go in large boxes. A small box full of books is manageable. A large box full of books is nearly impossible to lift safely and risks the bottom giving out. A large box of throw pillows, on the other hand, is perfectly fine. 4. Pack Heavy Items on the Bottom of Each Box

A box that isn’t properly sealed is a liability — it can burst open under load and drop everything on whoever is carrying it. Use strong packing tape (not masking tape or scotch tape) and apply at minimum three strips across the bottom seam in an H-pattern. Do the same on top. If a box feels soft or flexible when you press the sides, it needs more tape or a smaller box. Never move a box that isn’t fully sealed.

Once you’re in your new home, break down boxes as you unpack them rather than letting them pile up. Flattened boxes stack efficiently in a garage or utility area.
